1. (verb) to be talkative, witty, loquacious, chatty, mouthy.

He pai tonu te tangata i te wā kāore he waipiro i roto, he tangata hūmārie, ngākau aroha, engari kia tae ia ki te puna o tōna kai, kia rua kia toru ngā karaihe kua tātākī tōna waha; kua pērā me te manu e tīmata ana ki te waiata, ka whakatāmoumou i tōna kakī, ka roharoha i ōna parirau (TP 5/1911:2). / A man is quite alright when he has no liquor inside him, he is a pleasant compassionate person, but when he turns to drink and has two or three glasses he becomes loquacious; like a bird beginning to sing, when it puffs out its throat and flaps its wings.

2. (modifier) chattering, chirping, calling, witty.

Ko taku manu he kōpara, ko tēnei manu he pūkōrero nō ngā manu tātākī o te ata (TP 5/1905:9). / My bird is a bellbird and this bird is the leader of the songbirds of the morning.
Ka tū te tangata ki te whaikōrero i te pō tae noa ki waenganui pō, ka rongo te tangata i te reka o te waha o taua tangata e kōrero ana ka mea te iwi, "Ē, kātahi anō ka kō ngā kōpara tātākī a Rongomaitāpui." (TP 5/1905:9). / When a man stands to speak at night through to the middle of the night and a person hears how eloquent that man speaking is, the people say, " Oh, the singing bellbirds of Rongomaitāpui are calling."

3. (noun) chatter, chattering, chirping, racket, din, cacophony.

Hei te turituri kāore e taea te whakaatu, me te pōkai kākā tērā e tātākī ana i te ahiahi, he rite tonu te tātākī o te tangata me tō te kurī, kāore e mōhiotia ko tēwhea te mea kaha (TP 4/1912:1). / It's impossible to describe the noise, it was like a flock of kākā chattering in the evening, the din of the people was on a par with that of the dogs, it couldn't be determined which was the loudest.
