1. (verb) (-tia) to fashion a barb, make a notch.

Nō tētahi rā ka kai anō te ika, ka tāwhiwhi ā rāua aho; nā ka totohe i te moana, kei tā wai matau te ika. Nō te ekenga ake ka kitea kei tā Irawaru; ka kite hoki a Māui, he mea whakakāniwhatia tā Irawaru (M 2005:348). / One day, when the fish began to bite, their lines became entangle; and they argued while at sea as to whose hook had the fish. When it was pulled up it was seen that it was on that of Irawaru; and Māui noticed that Irawaru's hook was barbed.
