Ko te moe a te manu, au ana te moe ki te peka o te rākau; ko te moe a te tangata, tūtakarerewa tonu i te taua (JPS 1902:129). / The sleep of a bird is sound on the branch of a tree, but the sleep of a person is always unsettled because of the enemy. (A whakataukī referring to the need to be alert at all times.)
2. (modifier) alert, unsettled, apprehensive.
Heoti, e mau tonu ana te wairua tūtakarerewa i waenga i a rātou (TTR 1990:317). / However, tension between them continued.
3. (noun) tension, unease.
Ka kino haere te tūtakarerewa i te hokitanga mai o ngā rerenga ki Tūranga, i te matenga o ngā Hauhau i Ūawa (TTR 1994:57). / Tension increased further when the survivors returned to Gisborne, following the defeat of the Hauhau at Tolaga Bay.
