tūpato

1. (verb) to be cautious, careful, wary, suspicious, alert, vigilant - usually followed by kei before a verb and ki or before a noun phrase.

Tāpukea ngā take o ngā rākau ki te maniua, engari kia tūpato kei hutihutia ngā pakiaka (TP 6/1908:11). / Cover round the bases of the trees with manure but be careful not to pull up the roots.
I āta whai whakaaro ia ki ngā tāpaetanga whenua o tōna iwi, me tana whakaōhiti ki tōna iwi kia tūpato ki ngā āhua o te Kāwana me te whakawai o te reti (Te Ara 2017). / She thought carefully about the alienation of the lands of her people, and warned them to be careful about the ways of the Governor and the temptations of rent.
