1. (verb) (-hia,-ngia,-tia) to pick out (of a hole), scoop out, tear out, pick holes (in anything), gouge.

Nā tana kaha pukuriri ka huri a Tāwhirimātea ka tīkaro i ōna ake whatu, ka whiua ki te rangi hei whetū (Te Ara 2013). / Tāwhirimātea became so angry that he gouged out his eyes and threw them into the heavens as stars.
