1. (verb) to falter, slip, stumble, speak incoherently, speak inarticulately, totter.

Ka noho mai e toru ngā rōpū hei whakaako. Ko te rōpū tino matatau, ko te rōpū ahua matatau me te rōpū e tapepe tonu ana ki te kōrero engāri e tino ngākau nui mai ana ki te reo me ōna āhuatangā katoa (HM 1/1991:4). / There were three groups to teach. The group that was really fluent, the group that was somewhat fluent and the group who spoke falteringly but were keen to speak the language and all other aspects.
