pūwhā

1. (noun) perennial sowthistle, Sonchus arvensis, sowthistle, Sonchus oleraceus , prickly sowthistle, Sonchus asper and Sonchus kirkii - small leafy plants with thistle-like leaves and milky juice. They are boiled and eaten as a green vegetable. Sonchus kirkii is the only one native to Aotearoa/New Zealand.

Ka kai rātou i ngā toenga o tērā pō; he mīti, he pūwhā; he takakau hei kīnaki (TWK 6:2). / They ate the leftovers of the previous night; meat, sowthistle and unleavened bread to complement these.
