1. (verb) to be disappointed, failed in one's objective.

I ngere taua tangata, i haere ki te tiki i tana mea, ā kīhai i whiwhi, ā hoki ngere mai ia (W 1971:233). / That man failed when he went to collect his thing he did not obtain it and he came back disappointed.

2. (verb) to be passed over, not served, skipped over, missed out.

Tokorua o māua i ngere (W 1971:233). / Two of us missed out.
Ka roa tonu rātou e pēnei ana, me te mātaki a ngā uha i tā rātou mahi. Nā wāi, nā wai, ka whiriwhiri tēnā me tēnā o ngā uha i tāna i pai ai, ā, he nui tonu ngā toa ka ngere (HM 4/1998:4). / For quite a long time they behaved in this way, with the females watching what they did.
