tīpako haukume
1. (noun) biased sample, non-representative sample, skewed sample.
Ka whakaritea tētahi tīpako. Ākene pea ka tirohia te pukapuka waea o Tāmaki-makau-rau, ā, ka waeahia atu ia tangata rima tekau, ka uiuia ko rātou anake. He tīpako tēnei, engari he tīpako haukume. Ehara i te tīpako matapōkere nā te mea kāore i whai wāhi mai te hunga i waho atu i Tāmaki-makau-rau e noho ana, kāore hoki i whai wāhi mai te hunga kore waea (TRP 2010:290). / A sample is arranged. Perhaps the Auckland telephone book is looked at and every fiftieth person is phoned, they are the only ones interviewed. This is a sample, but a biased sample. It's not a random sample because people living outside Auckland are not involved, and nor are people who don't have a phone.
