rōpine
1. (verb) (-a) to place close together.
I whaohia ā rāua kupu ki roto i taua pūtea, nō te paunga ki roto kātahi ka kumea te tau, kātahi ka rōpine mai ā rāua kupu ki te tangere o te pūtea, ka takoto i konā mō āke tonu atu (TPH 30/3/1901:3). / Their words were placed in that bag and once inside the tie was pulled and then their words were close together in the bottom of the bag where they lie forever.
2. (modifier) united, close together.
Ka tata taua kaumātua ki te mate, ka kī atu a ia ki tana whānau, "I muri i a au, me noho rōpine tonu koutou, kaua e wehewehea tā koutou mahi me tā koutou noho, kei mate koutou." (TW 27/7/1878:374). / When that elder was close to death he said to his extended family, "After I'm gone, you must stay united, do not be divided in your work and where you live or you will be defeated."
