Kua whakatupuria tēnei taru, te hapi, i luropi inamata noa atu. Mō ana puāwai i whakatupuria ai, arā, hei mea whakakawa i te pia e kainga nei kia nanamu ai ki te korokoro, kia mau roa ai hoki, arā, kia kore ai e piro (TWMNT 11/1/1879:234). / This plant, the hop, has been grown in Europe for a long time for its flowers, which are used in giving a bitter flavour to beer so that it tingles the palate, as well as for preserving it, that is so that it does not go off.
