Ki te Pākehā he tuku mana tēnei, engari i roto i tētahi tuhituhinga a Tāmihana ki a Kerei, ko te whakamārama 'he maungārongo', nā te mea i whakatakotoria e ngā taha e rua ngā rākau whawhai (TTR 1990:324). / On 27 May 1865 Tāmihana laid down his taiaha before Carey at Tamahere, and agreed that the Queen's laws would also be the laws for the Māori King. To Pākehā this was an act of surrender, but in a letter by Tāmihana to Grey it was explained as a covenant of peace, both sides laid down weapons.
