āinga whakararo
1. (noun) forcing downwards, subduction - a geological process where one tectonic plate moves under another.

Ka kīia tēnei ko te āinga whakararo (RP 2009:305). / When the tectonic plates ram against each other other, sometimes the oceanic plate is forced under the continental plate and many earthquakes and volcanic eruptions result. This is called subduction.
