1. (personal name) Major Gustavus Ferdinand von Tempsky (1828-1868) adventurer, soldier, writer and artist. Born in East Prussia, von Tempsky spent time in a number of countries before coming to Aotearoa/New Zealand in 1862. He joined the Forest Rangers in 1893 and fought in the Bay of Plenty, Waikato and Wanganui campaigns. In 1868 he was killed when fighting against Tītokowaru at Te Ngutu-o-te-manu.
