2. (stative) be defeated, beaten, overcome, conquered, vanquished.

He iwi toa a Ngāti Whātua; ā tata tonu ka whara i a rātau a Ngā Puhi (M 2004:340). / Ngāti Whātua were a brave people; and they nearly defeated Ngā Puhi (M 2004:341).
