...ā ko te Manate, he kupu te Mane, mō te ingoa o te marama e whiti nei, arā ki te Pākehā he mūnu, ā he karakia nā taua iwi te marama i taua rā, koia te ingoa o te Mane, arā te Mūnute, te rā e karakia ai ki te marama (TW 22/6/1878:6/314). / Monday, the word for 'Mane', stands for the moon that shines, that is the ‘moon’ to the Pākehā, and that tribe worshipped the moon on that day, so that is the name of Monday, that is Moon-day, the day when they would worship the moon.

Rāhina

1. (noun) Monday.

I ngā rā o mua, ko te Mane te rā whakanui i te marama. Nā runga i tēnei āhua, ka whakaarahia ake tētahi o ngā kupu tawhito mō te marama, arā ko māhina. Ka tāpirihia tēnei ki te kupu 'rā', ka whakataka mai ai ko te mā o māhina, kia poto ake ai, kia noho kē mai ko te Rāhina hei ingoa hou mō te Mane (HM 3/1994:7). / In former times Monday was the day celebrating the moon. Because of this aspect, one of the ancient words for the moon has been revived, that is māhina. This word has been appended to the word 'rā', then dropping the mā of māhina so that it's shorter, thus leaving Rāhina as a new name for Monday.
