mānga
1. (verb) (-ia,-tia) to feed food that has been chewed so that it is soft.
I ngā wā o mua, me mānga ngā kai mā te pēpi kāore anō i whai niho, arā, ka ngaungaua te kai mārō kia ngāwari. / In the past food for babies that didn't yet have teeth had to be masticated, that is, hard food was chewed so that it was soft.
2. (noun) remains of food (after a meal).
Ka kite i te mānga aruhe e takoto ana, ka noho, ka kai (W 1971:177). / When she saw the leftover fern-root lying there, she sat down and ate.
mangā
1. (noun) barracouta, Thyrsites atun - a long slender fish, metallic blue on back and sides, silvery below. Head pointed with prominent, large, sharp, dagger-like teeth.
I Te Wai Pounamu ka hopukina te mangā mā te pohau (Te Ara 2011). / In the South Island barracouta were caught using a large wooden hook with a bone barb.
2. (noun) greens, leafy vegetables.
He tāngata ahu māra te mahi a ngā Rikihana, ā, i mua o te haerenga, o te hokinga mai rānei o Īnia i te kura, he miraka kau, he kato manga, he kohikohi, he tapahi tāwhaowhao mai i te ākau wāna mahi (TTR 2000:225). / The Rikihanas were market gardeners and before or after school Īnia had to milk cows, pick vegetables, and collect and chop driftwood from the beach.
3. (noun) act (of a play).
Nāna i whakarite te puoro mō te whakamatuatanga i waenganui i ngā manga o te whakaari (RMR 2017). / She arranged the music for the interval between the acts of the play.
-manga
1. (particle) A suffix used to make verbs into nouns, sometimes called derived nouns, and the usual ending for verbs that take the passive ending -mia. These nouns usually mean the place or the time of the verb's action.

mānga-a-Huripapa
1. (noun) New Zealand iris, native iris, Libertia ixioides - a native plant seen beside tracks and streams. Leaves turn yellow to orange in full sun and are smooth, stiff and long, growing in fans forming a tuft. Flowers are white and three-petalled while the fruit is yellow pear-shaped capsules.
