Toketoke

1. (personal name) tuberculosis, consumption - the name of an ancestor of Te Taitokerau which came to be the personification of the disease.

Ki Te Tai Tokerau, ko ngā tohu ēnei o Toketoke. Kua kite au i ētahi tāngata e kīia ana e ngā mātauranga Māori e ngaua ana e Toketoke, ā mōhio tonu iho taku mātauranga Pākehā e ngaua ana e te mate kohi (TTT 1/7/1922:10). / To the people of Northland, these are the symptoms of Toketoke. I have seen some people which the Māori intellects said were afflicted by Toketoke, and know from my Pākehā education that they had been struck down with tuberculosis.
