1. (location) The Milky Way - a band of light crossing the sky, made up of vast numbers of faint stars.
Ko Rauru-rangi te kete pupuri i te rā, ko Te Kauhanga te kete pupuri i te marama, ko Te Ikaroa te kete pupuri i ngā whetū (Te Ara 2015). / The basket holding the sun was named Rauru-rangi, the basket containing the moon was Te Kauhanga, and the basket holding the stars was Te Ikaroa (the Milky Way).

I te paenga o te kaipuke a te 'Harriet', i Te Ikaroa i Āperire o te tau 1834, ka tautohetohe ngā tāngata o te kaipuke me te tangata whenua (TTR 1990:232). / When the 'Harriet' ran aground at Cape Egmont in April 1834, trouble broke out between the seamen and the local people.

1. (location) North Island - sometimes shortened to just Te Ikaroa.
Ko Te Ikaroa-a-Māui te ingoa tuatahi o tēnei motu, haunga ia a Te Wai Pounamu, kei waho atu a reira i tēnei hutinga a Māui, me tēnei ingoa (TTT 1/3/1930:1998). / Te Ikaroa-a-Māui (Māui's long fish) was the first name of this land, but it didn't include the South Island, that island was outside this catch of Māui, as is this name.

1. (personal name) (1950-2013 ) Ngāti Porou, Te Aitanga a Hauiti, Ngāti Kahungunu, Ngāi Tahu; labourer, printer, civil servant, Labour Party politician. Elected for the Ikaroa-Rāwhiti electorate in 1999. Minister of Māori Affairs in 2000-2008. Played a significant role in setting up Māori Television and expanding the role of iwi radio in New Zealand. Renowned for his strong ties with the people of his electorate and Māori generally.
