Rauparaha, Te

Topeora, Rangi Kuīni Wikitōria

1. (personal name) (?-1865-73?) Ngāti Toa; leader and waiata composer who moved south from Kāwhia to the Kapiti coast with Te Rauparaha. Te Rangihaeata was her brother and her son was Mātene Te Whiwhi.

1. (personal name) (?-1839) Ngāti Toa, Ngāti Raukawa; leader, sister of Te Rauparaha and mother of Te Rangihaeata and Rangi Topeora. Moved south from Kāwhia to the Kapiti area with her tribes.

Pēhi Kupe, Te

1. (personal name) (?-1828) Ngāti Toa; chief and warrior who fought with Te Rauparaha in the conquest of new territories in central Aotearoa/New Zealand, establishing their headquarters on Kapiti Island. Visited England in 1824 where he met King George IV, returning with guns for the invasion of the South Island, but he was killed at Kaiapoi pā after insulting a Ngāi Tahu chief.

Ko Te Pēhi Kupe te mātāmua o ngā tama a Toitoi, ā, i heke mai a ia i ngā tātai matua o Toa Rangatira, te tino tipuna o Ngāti Toa (TTR 1990:245). / Te Pehi Kupe was the firstborn of Toitoi's sons and was descended in the senior line from Toa Rangatira, the eponymous ancestor of Ngāti Toa.

Pūoho-o-te-rangi, Te

1. (personal name) (?-1836/37?) Ngāti Tama; leader who migrated south from Taranaki with Te Rauparaha and Ngāti Toa, establishing settlements in the northern South Island. Killed at Mataura by Tūhawaiki's Ngāi Tahu war party.

Taiaroa, Te Mātenga

1. (personal name) (?-1863) Ngāi Tahu; chief and warrior who fought against Te Rauparaha and Ngāti Toa and their allies, eventually driving them out of the South Island. He played a major role in establishing peace between Ngāi Tahu and Ngāti Toa.

1. (personal name) (?-1855) Ngāti Toa; leader and warrior who fought beside his uncle, Te Rauparaha, in the battles during and after the migration from Kāwhia to the central North Island.

1. (personal noun) tribal group from the Maungatautari-Tokoroa area. Some migrated from there with Te Rauparaha to the Ōtaki area.
