1. (noun) calabash, gourd, gourd plant, Lagenaria siceraria - a cultivated plant. The hard shell of the fruit is used for a variety of purposes.

hue puruwai

1. (noun) shaker - medium-sized gourd with seeds used as a musical instrument by shaking.

Ki te waiho noatia nga kākano ki roto tonu o te hue nui, ka waiho kia maroke, ka taea te āta huri i te hue kia puta ko tētahi puoro rite tonu ki tētahi wairere. Ko tēnei taonga puoro he hue puruwai (TWK 41:7). / If the seeds are left inside a large gourd and it's left to dry the gourd can be used to produce a sound like a waterfall. This musical instrument is a hue puruwai.

1. (noun) shaker, rattle - a small gourd with the seeds either left to dry or replaced with small stones used as a musical instrument to create a strong rhythm.

Ko te hue rarā he hue ngā mauranga ā-ringa a wētahi i roto i ngā mahinga kanikani, whakatautau, whakakorikori rānei (Wh3 2003:162). / The hue rarā (rattles) are gourds that are sometime held in the hands during dances, songs of enchantment or with body movements.

1. (noun) large gourd used as a musical instrument played by blowing over the top opening.

Kei roto i te hue puruhau te reo romiromi o Hine-pū-te-hue hai whakarata i a Tangaroa (Wh3 2003:162). / Inside the hue puruhau is the soothing voice of Hine-pū-te-hue (atua of musical instruments made from the gourd) which is used to pacify Tangaroa (atua of the sea).

pōtaka hue

1. (noun) gourd whistle top - made by placing a thin spindle through a hollow gourd, then drilling holes on the side of the gourd. When spun, the top would emit an eerie whistle.

Ka weroa hoki he kōhao i te taha o te pōtaka hue, ina tāia, ka korowhiowhio (RMR 2017). / Holes are bored into the sides of a gourd spinning top and when it is whipped it whistles.

1. (personal name) daughter of Tāne-mahuta and Hine-rauamoa and originator of the musical instruments made from the gourd, which produce soft soothing sounds.
