2. (noun) bushman's mattress, Lygodium articulatum - loosely climbing native fern with long, wiry, twisting stalks reaching into the tops of trees. Side stalks fork 2-3 times, ending in long, strap-like leaflets. Common in lowland forest of the northern half of the North Island.

1. how excellent, how wonderful, marvellous - an idiom to exclaim about how good something is.

I tukua mai taua kōrero e tētahi mīhini i te whenua o te Wīwī, whakawhiti mai i te moana, ka hopukia atu e te mīhini i Ingarangi. Ka kino te haere a te Pākehā! (HKW 1/4/1899:8). / That story was sent from France, across the ocean and received by a machine in England. The Pākehā are amazing!
Ka pā te pōhiri a te kōkō nei, kai te rarangi tuatahi o te pānui nei, kātahi ka kī te waha o te tangata whenua ki te pōhiri, ka kino tā rātau nei haere (TPH 31/7/1900:5). / When the welcome call of this sweet voice went out, in the first line of this call, then the host began the welcome haka, and it was awesome.

1. excellent, really skilled, masterful, first-rate, top-notch, outstanding, superb, exceptional - an idiom to express praise for someone, an action or some other aspect. Both or either te and hoki may be omitted, while te may be replaced by ka or he.

Kāretu, Tā Tīmoti Samuel

1. (personal name) KNZM, QSO (1937) Tūhoe, Ngāti Kahungunu; teacher and scholar of Māori language and performing arts. Established the Department of Māori at The University of Waikato as Head of Department and then Professor before becoming the inaugural Māori Language Commissioner at Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori (1987-1999). Awarded Honorary Doctorates from Victoria University of Wellington in 2003 and The University of Waikato in 2008. He has been Executive Director of Te Panekiretanga o Te Reo, the Institute of Excellence in Māori Language, since 2003 and is also Chairperson for Te Kōhanga Reo National Trust. Awarded his knightood in 2017.

kāore/kore (kē) he painga i [a Mea]

1. [so-and-so] is very good at, [you're] too much, [you're] on to it, no flies on [you], no sweat, without peer, no comparison, [you're] the best - an idiom used to say how very good someone is at a particular activity, or how excellent something is.

Kāore he painga i a Poia mō te tito waiata. / Poia is outstanding at composing songs.
Kore he painga i a koe mō te kōrero paki. / You're too much at telling yarns.
Mō te komekome, kāore he painga. / For whinging, she’s without peer.
