1. (verb) to be dried up.
Ko au tonu kua kite i ētahi wāhi nui i te taha hiwi e nui tonu ana te wai o ngā puna i te wā e tupungia ana te whenua e te rākau, ā, nō te korenga o te rākau kua kore hoki, kua pakihi (TWMNT 11/8/1874:198). / I myself have seen large tracts on the hiill-side with plenty of water in the springs when the land was covered by tree, but when the trees were no longer there they had completely dried up.
2. (verb) to be at its lowest (of the tide).
Riro mai ana ki runga ki taua poti aua tāngata i tahuri ki te wai, arā, tokorua tāne, kotahi wahine, kotahi tamaiti, he Māori anake, engari he tai pakihi te tai, nō reira kāore i taea te hoki mai taua poti (TWMNT 11/7/1976:172). / Those people were carried off in that boat that capsized on the water. There were two men, a woman, and a child, all Māori, but the tide was right out and so that boat was not able to return.
2. (noun) business, enterprise, venture.
I te tau 1946 ka tīmataria e ia tana pakihi hī ika (TTR 2000:57). / In 1946 he started his fishing business.
2. (noun) open grasslands, barren land, open country.
Kātahi ka tīkina ka whawhaitia a Raumati me ōna iwi, ka mate a Ngāti Ohomairangi, ka horo, ā ka tae ki te matua e takoto ana mai i te pākihi (JPS 1925:309). / Ngāti Ohomairangi then attacked Raumati and his people, but were defeated and fled, falling back on the main body lying out in the open country.
