1. (noun) authority over the sea and lakes - although this is a modern term, the concept of authority over lakes and parts of the sea (mana o te moana) is traditional. According to Māori custom, land rights extended as well to adjacent sea or lakes with fixed boundaries for inshore and deep-sea fishing and the gathering of seafood.

Me hoki atu au ki te āhua o ngā kōrero kua hua ake i roto i ēnei rā: te mana whenua, te mana tangata me te kararehe hou nei, te mana moana (Wh4 2004:239). / Let me return to the types of terms being used today: 'mana whenua' (authority over land), 'mana tangata' (inherited status) and this new beast 'mana moana' (authority over the sea).

1. (noun) thorny worm, Glycera americana - a large slender species found in mud at low tide. Sometimes grows to 600 mm.


2. (noun) zebra earthworm, Notoscolex equestris - earthworm with zebra-like bands of pale cream alternating with purplish-brown. Found on Poor Knights Islands.

1. (noun) globe sponge, Tethya aurantium - brilliant orange spong resembling a golf ball. Common in lower intertidal rocky zone attached under boulders and to the roofs of caverns.

1. (noun) red sea anemone, Actinia tenebrosa - the most common species of sea anemone found in the waters of eastern Australia and Aotearoa/New Zealand. Found relatively high on the seashore, in rock pools, and various cracks and shaded surfaces in the intertidal zone. Deep red or reddish-brown colour and when expanded has a circle of numerous pink tentacles.

kakau moana

1. (noun) gummy weed, Splachnidium rugosum - a little brown seaweed found on intertidal rocks all around the coast of Aotearoa/New Zealand. Its tubular fronds are full of sticky gum, which protects the seaweed from shrivelling up when the tide is out.

ika moana

1. (noun) whale - a general term.

Ka kitea te ika moana e pae ana i uta (W 1971:76). / The whale was found stranded on the shore.

kanohi moana

1. (noun) sea-gooseberry, Pleurobrachia pileus - a free-swimming transparent animal resembling a jelly-fish, but with eight external bands of short comb-like structures which run from top to bottom of the oval or pear-shaped animal. The body is 15-50 mm long.

Ka tae ana te waka ki te moana waiwai, ka puta te āwhā. / When the canoe reached the open sea the storm occurred.

I mua atu i a koe ko te kaipuke iti a Kāpene Kuku, ōna hoe he kōmaru, i whiti mai ai i te moana tuauriuri, tau ana ki ngā wai o Hauraki (TWM 27/5/1869:2). / Before you, it was Captain Cook's small sailing ship, its propulsion was with sails, that crossed the ocean and arrived to the waters of the Hauraki Gulf.
